Change Your Name in Michigan

As a Michigan Wedding Officiant, there’s no doubt the question I get asked most often after officiating for my couples is, “how do I change my name on everything? Where do I go first? Can I do it all at the same time? What documents will I need?”

Below is everything you need to know about the Michigan Marriage License from when and how to apply to filing.

STEP 1- HAVE A SERVICE DO IT ALL FOR YOU!

Why do it yourself when it can be done for you? The simplest, stress-free way to change your name after you get married would be to sign up with Hitch Switch, a service that helps you get it done in 3 easy straightforward steps and costs under $40. If you prefer to change your name yourself, follow the instructions below:

STEP 2- GET A CERTIFIED COPY OF YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE

A certified copy of your marriage license is considered

proof of your marriage and what will make your name change possible.

It’s important to note that while some counties in Michigan provide certified copies automatically when you pick up your license (they’re easy to spot as it contains a raised seal) most do not.

If the copy your Officiant/Pastor gives you isn’t certified, you’ll need to apply for one through the county clerk’s office where you applied.

Fees for a certified copy are typically $10-$30 and vary by county. If you’re not sure if your copy is certified, check the instruction sheet that came in your License packet or contact the county clerk’s office where you applied. They’re happy to help!

STEP 3- CHANGE YOUR NAME WITH SOCIAL SECURITY

The next step in changing your name after the wedding begins at the Social Security Office.

You can change your name with Social Security free by completing and filing the

SS-5 form.

Although you’ll have the option to apply by mail, I recommend you go in person so you don’t have your personal identification floating in the mail.

What you’ll need:

You’ll need to provide proof of age, identity and citizenship. If you have a valid US Passport, you’re in luck as that’s all you’ll need to show proof.

If you do not have a Passport, provide a bring your Birth Certificate, Driver’s License and of course, that certified copy of your marriage license.

Once you’re done, they’ll give you a receipt. Keep it because you’ll need it for Step 4!

STEP 4- CHANGE YOUR NAME ON YOUR DRIVER’S LICENSE OR STATE ID

The next step in changing your name after the wedding is changing it with Michigan Secretary of State.

The only way to apply is by making an appointment with the DMV in person.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you filed for your new Social Security card at least 48 hours before applying for your new driver’s license/State ID as the License Bureau checks with Social Security before they process a new form of identification in a different name.

What you’ll need:

You’ll need your current License/ID, certified marriage certificate and proof of residency if you recently moved. (Be sure to check with the License Bureau for the list of documents they accept for proof of residency.)

STEP 5- CHANGE YOUR NAME WITH YOUR BANK, CREDIT CARDS & CREDITORS

The 5th and final step to changing your name after the wedding is changing it with your bank, creditors, utilities, and pretty much anyone who sends you important mail!

While banks and credit card companies will most likely require you to complete a form and upload documents, updating others on your list may be as simple as updating them over the phone.
